PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT

WHAT IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT?

For individuals who are experiencing emotional, behavioural, or cognitive difficulties (e.g., mood issues, excessive worry, difficulty relaxing, fears and avoidance of specific situations, emotional distress in response to stressful events, compulsive behaviours, and disorganized thinking), clarifying the nature and severity of such difficulties is an important step in assisting them with accessing timely and appropriate treatment and support. Psychological disorders, if left untreated, can have a significant negative impact on all aspects of an individual’s life, including family, relationships, performance in school or at work, and general enjoyment of life.

Psychodiagnostic assessment is a process of identifying and differentiating between psychological causes of mental health symptoms that an individual is experiencing. It typically involves an in-depth interview with the individual, as well as the administration of standardized measures of personality traits and emotional functioning. The outcome of the assessment may be the diagnosis of one or more psychological disorders or a description of findings without any diagnosis. If any diagnosis is offered, recommendations for evidence-based psychological treatment options and accommodations for academic or work settings will also be provided.
